DOCS. 499-501
JANUARY
1914
I
was very sorry
to
hear
from
Rosa that
she has to
search
again.[5]
I
wrote
her
a
letter
offering
to
help
as
much
as
I
can.[6]
Stark
claims
to
have discovered
a
Zeemann
effect in
the electrical
field.[7]
The
paper
is
a
mess,
but the
folks in
Berlin
were
persuaded
by
it.
It
is
in fact
crazy
that
you
have
no access
to
any physics
journal
in
your
godforsaken hole.[8]
How
can
you
stand
it?
But
it would be
even
worse
if
you were
to
read
all
the
stuff I
get
and leave
unread.
The
fraternity
of
physicists
behaves rather
passively
with
respect
to
my gravitation
paper.
Abraham
seems
to have the
greatest understanding
for
it.[9]
To
be
sure,
he
fulminates
against
all
relativity
in
Scienza,
but
he does it with
understanding.[10]
I
will
visit
Lorentz
this
spring[11]
in
order
to
discuss
the
matter with him.
He
is
greatly
interested
in
it,
likewise
Langevin.[12]
Laue
is
not
open
to
the fundamental consider-
ations,
and
neither
is Planck,
while
Sommerfeld
is
more
likely
to be
so.[13]
A
free,
unprejudiced
look
is not at
all
characteristic of
the
(adult)
Germans
(blinders!).[14]
I
am
studying English (with
Wohlwend),
slowly
but
thoroughly.[15]
Cordial
greetings,
also
to
Vero
and Anna, from
your
Albert

500.
To
Rosa Bandi-Winteler
[Zurich, 7
January
1914]
Dear
Rosa,
I have
just
written
to
my
friend
Ehrat[1]
that
he should visit
you immediately.
You
will receive
a
postcard
from him.
He
should
board
with
you
in
Winterthur;
you
should
then
try
to
start
a
little
boardinghouse
there.
Naturally,
I
recommended
you warmly,
but
I
spoke exclusively
about the
boardinghouse
business.
It
is
better
so,
because
totally
harmless.
I
would be
very glad
if this
thing
could be
realized
in
some
shape
and form.
Best
regards
from
your
Albert
By
all
means
be
friendly
with
him;
he
is
absolutely
not
aggressive
or
domineering.
501.
From
Jakob
Ehrat
Winterthur, 7 January
1914
Dear
Einstein,
I could not
make
a
promise
to Mrs. Bandi.
Just
today I
made
an
agreement
to
take
a new room
in
mid-April,[1]
and I cannot
go
back
on
this
agreement,
and
also
wouldn't
