To

Lenard

November

Highly
esteemed Professor
Lenard:[1]
Thank
you very
much for the
paper
you
sent
me;
I
studied
it with
the
same
feeling
of
admiration
as
I did
your
earlier
papers.[2]
I
would like
to
take
this
opportunity
to
make
a
short factual remark.
The
experiments
known
to
me
do
not
rule
out
the
possibility
that the emission
and
the
absorption
of each
individual
spectral
line
are
associated with
a
distinct
state
of the
emitting or
the
absorbing
center
(atom)
characteristic of
the line.
In
fact,
you
have
already proved
that the
same
is true
for the individual
series.[3]
Its
simplicity
argues
a
priori
for such
an
assumption,
since
one
would not have to
posit
mechanisms of
light
emission and
absorption
that
possess
the
manifoldness
of
an
entire series.
According
to
the indicated
conception,
the
absorption
of
a
series
by
a
(cold)
vapor
would have
to
be
conceived
as a
process
in which
the
absorption
of the
light
of the
line
u1
renders the
absorbing center
in
question
capable
of
absorbing
the
light
of the
line
u2,
etc.
The
absorption
of
u2
would
then
be
possible only
with
the simultaneous
absorption
of
U1
by
the
vapor.[4]
Respectfully,

Highly
esteemed
Dr. Einstein:
You
made
me
very
happy
by
sending me
your many
interesting papers,
so
I wish to
thank
you
for them without
delay,
and also
to take
this occasion
to
thank
you
belatedly
for
the series of
papers
that
I
received from
you
in
previous
years.[2]
It
was
only
for
want
of
your
exact
address that
I failed
to
do
so
immediately.
But
rest
assured that
I
was
delighted
each
time
that
you
so
kindly
remembered
me, and,
