DOCS.
80-82 FEBRUARY
1908
semester via
Habilitation,
I
must
see
to it
that
you
be
given an
opportunity
of another
kind to
prove
yourself
as a
lecturer.[5]
(A
lecture
at
the
Naturforschende
Ges[ellschaft]
or
something
similar).
Please
keep
me
up to
date.
Respectfully,
A.
Kleiner
81.
To
Paul Gruner
Bern, 11 February
1908
Highly
esteemed Professor Gruner:
The
conversation
I
had
with
you
in the
city library,
as
well
as
the
advice
of
several
friends,
has
now
induced
me
to
change my
decision for the second time and to
try
to
habilitate
at
the
University
of Bern after
all.[1]
To that end
I have
submitted
a
Habilitationsschrift
to
the
dean.[2]
It
is
a
matter
of
importance to
me
that
the time I will
spend
on
lectures-provided
my
petition
will be approved-be
spent
as
well
as
possible,
i.e.,
I would like to
give
a
course
that
is
adapted
to
the
degree
of
training
and to the
area
of interest of
a
few
students. It
would
probably
also be
advantageous
if the
(two-hour)
course
I
would be
giving
could
serve as a
kind of
supplement
to
the
courses given by
you.[3]
For
all
these
reasons
I
would
appreciate
it if
you
could
let
me
know when and
where
we
could meet
to
discuss
these
things.
Respectfully yours,
Dr.
A. Einstein
82.

Very
esteemed
Colleague:
Let
me
first
thank
you again
for
your
fine
Jahrbuch
report.[1]
This done,
I
would like
to
put
to
you
the
following
matter:
In
the
Jahrbuch that
I
edit,
there
has
already appeared
a
lengthy
report
by
Nichols
on
the
physics
of
fluorescence,[2]
and
furthermore
a
short
article
on
the connection
between constitution
and
fluorescence,
this from the
pen
of
a
chemist.[3]
In
addition,
I
myself
intend
to
publish a
short
note
on
the
latter
topic (confined
particularly
to
organic
chemistry).[4]
But what
I
would like most
of
all
is
an
article
about
your
"theoretical
foundation of
Stokes's
fluorescence
rule."[5]
I
would like it
to
become
known in chemical
circles
as
well.
May
I
therefore
respectfully
ask
you
whether
you
would be
ready
to
write
a
new, independent
article
on
this
topic, one
that
would also be
fairly
accessible to
