With

I
look forward very much to
reading
your
paper about
the Maschinchen.[4]

Esteemed
Colleague:
Regarding
the alleged
infringement
of your priority,
permit
me to offer you the
following explanation.[1]
When
I
was writing the
paper
on the
elementary quantum
of
energy,[2]
I
understood
your
paper
in
the
Annalen
("Ist
die
Tragheit
. .
.") ["Is
the
Inertia
. .
."][3]
as stating
that the
emission of energy
means
only
a
change in the
apparent
mass, and
that
the
latter
is
therefore
composed
out
of
a
proper
mass and the
additional
mass,
energy
Planck's
formula[4]

seemed
to me essentially new in
its radical conception.
After
having
read
your
report
in the
Jahrbuch[5]
and having given
some
further thought
to the
relations
in
question,
I
understand,
of course,
that Planck's
deductions have
their roots
in your
paper.
