and Geertruida de Haas
Sellin,
24 July 1915
Dear
Friends,
To
my
great
dismay
I
found this
letter
yesterday
in
my
apartment
in
Berlin,[1]
which
complicates
the
moving
business. Did
you
not
terminate with
Mr.
Schrobs-
dorff
orally
either?[2]
How
then
did
he happen
to draw
your
attention
to the
apartment’s
rentability
a
few
weeks
ago already?
I
fear
now
Mr.
S.
will
resist the
removal of
the
furniture. Please inform
me
exactly
what the
situation with
your
termination
actually
is
so
that
I
can
inquire
about what
can
be done. Write
me
the
details
very soon
to Berlin.
With
affectionate
greetings, yours,
A. Einstein.

To

Office

the
Director

Department
of Education for
the Canton
of
Zurich.
Highly
esteemed
Sir,
Since
yesterday
I have
been
feeling
most
keenly
the
difficulty
of
the
problem
that
you
have to
solve,
i.e.,
since
receipt
of
your
letter.[1] I
am
convinced
I cannot
tell
you
anything
that
you
have
not
already
heard from
my colleague
Mr.
Kleiner.
First,
Mr.
Greinacher.[2]
By
no means
does
this
person
lack
talent
for
scientific
research.
He
has
a
command
of
the
scientific methods within
a
specific,
albeit
not
very large,
field
and also knows
how
to set
problems
to
a
certain
degree.
However,
neither
his
prior
achievements
nor
that
which
I
have
come
to know from
personal
contacts
about the
level
of his
talent
makes it
seem
proper
to entrust him
with
the
leading post
at
the
university.
On
the other
hand,
however,
I
would welcome
it
if
a
way were
found
to
enable him
to
function
as
part-time
academic teacher.
In
this
way
the
university
could
perhaps
gain something
from
him,
and he would
not suffer such
a
very
severe
setback.[3]
About
Mr. Perrier
I
can
be
brief.[4] His
character
as a
scientist
is
related
to
that
of
Piccard,
but Piccard
appears
to
me
superior,
so
that
I permit
myself
to
turn
immediately
to
the latter.
Piccard[5]
is
a man
of
extraordinary
technical
skill. He is
inventive with
mea-
surement
methods when
a
problem
is
already
set before him.
He
is,
moreover,
