AUGUST-SEPTEMBER

114. To
Elsa Einstein
[Heilbronn,]
Monday.
[30
August
1915][1]
Dear
Else,
Yesterday
(Sunday)
afternoon
4
o’clock I arrived
here
safe and sound and
was
collected from
the
train
by
Mama.[2]
She
was
tolerably
satisfied
with
my
appearance,
&
we very
much
enjoyed being together.
Eating
and mode of
life
strictly
according
to
regulation.
No
visits
are being
paid.
This
morning
I
was
at
the
police
station
and
am
sending you
the
passport
herewith. Summon
up
all of
your
skills
so
that it
goes quickly now;
it
will not
be
easy.[3]
The
photographs
are
enclosed.
I
haven’t
experienced anything yet.
Mama has still not
given up hope
of
traveling
to
Switzerland.[4]
I
am
supposed
to
help by
sending a telegram
from
Switzerland.
Kisses to
you
and the
children,
yours,
Albert.

Einstein
[Heilbronn,] Friday. Evening
[3
September
1915][1]
Dear
Else,
Scarcely
had
my telegram
left when
your
liberating postcard
arrived.
I
hur-
ried
straight
to
the
police
station and head
office,
and
an
hour
later
had
my
passport
ready
in
my
pocket.[2]
I know what hurdles and
pains you
must
have
endured for
me
and
that
you
are
my
trusty
lady
and
companion upon
whom I
can
safely
rely.
When
I return
again,
we’ll meet
and
spend
some
time
peacefully
in
the
countryside.
Don’t let it be
spoiled;
we are
going
to
be stuck in Berlin for
long enough.
I
intend
to
arrive in Berlin
Sunday
evening.[3]
There
was
little
to
complain
about
my
health.
I
never
had
any pain.
I
did
not
move more
than
was
necessary
for
my well-being
and
followed
the
diet
strictly.
It
is
even
better
here
than
in Berlin. Milk and
honey may
not be
flowing
any more,
but there
is
still
a
decent trickle.
You cannot
get any
fruit
here,
but there
are
vegetables.
The emotions
surrounding
my
trip to Switzerland
are
somewhat mixed.
Maja
wrote
me
she would
like to
speak
with
me
before
I
appear
in
Zurich.[4]
This
doesn’t bode well.-
I
have read
through
almost all
of
Spinoza’s
Ethics
here,
much
of
it
with
great
admiration.[5]
Kraft[6]
was
very right
in
drawing my
attention
to
this
profound
work.
I
believe
it
will leave
a
lasting impression
on me.
