DOCS. 246-248 AUGUST
1916 241
246. To Arnold Sommerfeld
[Berlin, 3
August
1916]
Dear
Sommerfeld,
I
shall be
glad
to
send
Mr.
Lenz
a
copy
of
my summary paper
on
gen-
eral
relativity.[1]
Schwarzschild’s calculations
are
correct.
I
have examined
them
closely
for
the
point.[2]
h
is
the
energy constant,[3]
must
therefore remain arbi-
trary.
Your
spectral
analyses
number
among my
finest
experiences
in
physics.[4]
It
is just through
them that
Bohr’s idea becomes
entirely convincing.
If
only I
knew which
little
screws
the
Lord
is adjusting
there!
With best
wishes for
your holidays, yours,
A.
Einstein.
247. From Gunnar Nordstrom
Leyden, 3
August 1916
Dear Prof.
Einstein,
There
are so
many
here in
Leyden
who would
like to
meet
you.
Do make
arrangements
so
that the
city
of
Leyden,
with all its
residents,
comes
to
you.
If
you
can
demonstrate
practically
that
a
reference
system
exists in which such
a
phenomenon occurs,
all
your
friends in Holland would be
very pleased.
I
also have been
working
here
on
your theory
and would
like
to discuss
some
matters.[1]
In
the
hope
that
we
really
shall
see
each
other
soon,
I
send
you my
most
cordial
greetings, yours,
G.
Nordstrom.

Sir,
(Einstein)
I just
received
your
letter
of
the
23rd
of
July.[2]
The
envelope
of
this
one
bore
the
following inscription: “delayed
because the
required
sender’s information
is
missing
on
the
exterior.”
