DOCS. 382-384
SEPTEMBER
1917 381
Cordial
regards
from
my
wife
and
me, yours,
Gunnar
Nordstrom.
383. To Edouard Guillaume
Berlin, 5
Haberland
St.,
24 September 1917
Dear
Guillaume,[1]
I
am
just
in
receipt
of
the
report
by
the
Swiss
Society
with
a
renewed
reprint-
ing
of
your
interpretation of
the
Lorentz
transformation.[2]
This
interpretation
is
impossible,
however,
because the
three
equations
v!
-
ß(u
-
ax)
du
dt
du'
dt
c
cannot be reconciled with
one
another. The t
you
introduce does not exist if
the
Lorentz
transformation
is
retained.
I
shall not return to
the
matter
publicly
if
you
do not force
me
to
by emphasizing
it
constantly.-
This
summer
I
could not
come
to Berne because
of
an
ailment
that
forced
me
to
rest;[3]
next
year again,
I
hope. Politically,
a more
salutary
wind
is
beginning
to
blow;[4]
all shall be
well
yet.
Best
regards
from
your
A.
Einstein.
384. To Walter Schottky
[Berlin,]
26 September 1917
Dear Mr.
Schottky,
Your
grave
misfortune
goes
very
much
to
my
heart.[1]
I
certainly
noticed how
happy
you
were
and
can imagine
what this
means
to
you.
Now
it
is
important,
though,
that
you
do not abandon
yourself aimlessly
to this
grief.
Don’t
stay
alone too much when
you
are
not
actually working
or
reading,
but interact
with
your colleagues,
so
that
you
don’t
lapse
into
dark
brooding.
I
would invite
you
on
walks if
I
did not have
to
refrain from such
things owing
to
my
frailness.[2]
