DOCS.
600,
601 AUGUST
1918
I
am
reading
with
particular
interest the
new
book
by
Max
Dessoir,
whom
you
met
once
at
our
house,
Vom
Jenseits der
Seele
[On
the Other Side
of
the
Soul]-
it
contains
many
notable
things,
particularly
for
a
medical doctor. All that
is
factually
and
critically
stated about the
frequently
cited
subconscience, hypnosis,
spiritualism,
occultism, etc.,
certainly
deserves
becoming generally
known also
among
educated
layman’s
circles.[3]
Of
course,
he lacks
a
gripping descriptive
style,
he
is
a
bit hard
to read.
As
we are discussing
the
subject
of
reading right now,
I would not like to
forget
to make
a
request:
In
case you
have available
an
extra
offprint
of
your
speech
on Planck,[4]
you
would
please
me exceedingly
if
you
sent
it
to
me.
At
the
close of
this
epistle,
I
do not want to call
myself so
lucky, as
you
have
done,
but
to
express my
contentment
that
up
to
now
I
have been often
enough
privileged
with
being
allowed
to
enjoy
fine
things,
to
grasp
problematic
issues
and,
above
all,
to witness
the
profoundest,
most
wondrous,
and
complicated
things
man
has
ever
encountered.
Cordial
regards
to
you
and
your ladies,
ever
yours truly,
Rosenheim
My wife
sends all
of
you
her
best
regards!
Special
thanks
to
you,
esteemed
Madam,
for
your
kind note.
601. To
Heinrich
Zangger
Ahrenshoop, 16 August
[1918][1]
Dear friend
Zangger,
You
are
a
tormentor of
moving kindness, throwing me once again
into
disarray
with
your
letter.[2] You
know
my
attitudes,
albeit
not
the
whole conflict inside
me.
But
one
thing
is
certain. In Berlin
I
am
surrounded
by
so
much
personal
kindness
and
solicitude,
as
concerns my colleagues
and
the authorities
that,
after
all of that,
I
cannot
think
of
going away
from there. Planck
and
Warburg
are
so
touching
toward
me,
visited
me
constantly
when
I
was
lying
sick in bed
last
winter. All
this
would
be obvious to
you
if
you
had
seen
it
as
well.
On
the other
hand,
as
before,
I consider
Zurich
my
true home and Switzerland
as
the
only
country
to which I
have
an affinity.
You
know all of this
very
well.
Now I
have
an
alternative.
I
would
like
to hold
frequent
lecture
cycles
of
about
6 weeks’ length
in
Zurich; approximately
twice
a
year,
either
during
the
holidays
or
during
the
academic
term. From this
the students
gain as
much
as
if
I
were
there
during
the
semester,
and I
can
do
this
easily
without
having
to
be
away
from Berlin all
too
much.
If
you
think
so, we can
start
right away
at
the
end of
September
or
in
