statutes,
to which members not
residing
in
Berlin,
like
Wien,
had taken
exception. They
are
set out
in
the
following
document.

the
Physikalische
Gesellschaft
zu
Berlin in
1845,
the
organization
became
a
national
society,
the Deutsche
Physikalische
Gesellschaft,
in
1899. The statutes
published
that
year,
however,
divided the
membership
into two
groups
with
distinct
privileges
and
duties,
the
one residing
in
Berlin,
the other in the rest
of
Germany
(see
DPG
Satzungen
1899, §5),
a
division
modeled
on
that
employed
in the Prussian
Academy.

demands
of
the
non-Berlin
physicists
at the
beginning
of
the
year
had
been
that the leader-
ship
of
the
society
be drawn not
only
from
Berlin,
but
from the
entire
country,
and that
annual
meet-
ings
be held not
only
in
Berlin but
in rotation in different cities

Lieber Herr
Kollege!
Die
Abhaltung,
die
Planck
hindert,
sich
jetzt
eingehend
mit den Statuten der
Physikalischen
Gesellschaft
zu
befassen,
ist bei
mir
in erhöhtem Maße
vorhanden,
da ich eine für den
König
bestimmte
Feier
der
Universität vorzuarbeiten
habe.[1]
Ich
möchte
aber bei
der
Wichtigkeit
der
Frage
für
die deutsche
Physik
meine Mit-
wirkung
nicht
ablehnen,
wenn
auch die
Aufgabe
der
Vermittelung
undankbar
zu
sein
pflegt.
Der
Plan,
die deutschen
Physiker
in einer
großen
Gesellschaft zusammenzuhal-
ten,
ist zweifellos ein sehr schöner. Aber in
einer
wirklichen deutschen
Physika-
lischen
Gesellschaft sollte
es nur
deutsche
Physiker
geben
und
nicht
zwei
Katego-
rien,
nämlich Berliner und Nichtberliner.
Berlin
sollte
nur
soweit
in
den Statuten
Vorkommen,
als der Sitz
der
Gesellschaft Berlin sein
soll,
wie
Leipzig
der
Sitz der
Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher
und Ärzte
ist,
und ferner
Geschäftsführer,
Schatzmeister und
Redakteur
in Berlin wohnen müssen.
Dem
gegenüber
stehen in dem
Statutenentwurf
folgende
Punkte:
1)
Jedes
Mitglied
zahlt
10 M,
die Berliner
Mitglieder
zahlen das
Doppelte.
2)
Die Wahlen finden bei
der
Generalversammlung
statt,
die Ende
April
in Ber-
lin
abgehalten
wird.
