Diese
vier
Herren sind
Mitglieder
der
hiesigen
Akademie[3] und mir durch ihre
weitherzige
und wohlwollende Art bekannt.
Ferner
empfehle
ich Ihnen in meiner Vaterstadt Zürich
folgende
Männer
Prof. Dr.
Stodola, Eidg.
techn. Hochschule.
Prof.
Dr.
H.
Zangger,
Universität Zürich.
Diesen beiden[4]
liegen
alle den wahren sozialen Fortschritt betreffenden
Angele-
genheiten
stets
am
Herzen.
Mit aller
Hochachtung
und
den besten Wünschen für das
Gelingen
des
guten
Werkes
Ihr
ganz
ergebener
A. Einstein.

[1]Nicolai né Lewinstein (1874-1964)
was
Titular
Professor of
Physiology at
the
University
of
Berlin,
Oberarzt
of
the II.
Medical
Clinic
of
the
Charité
Hospital,
and
primary
author
of
the Manifesto
to
the
Europeans
(see Vol. 6,
Doc.
8).
Elsa
Einstein
may
have
consulted him
on
her heart
problems
in
autumn 1913
(see
Einstein to
Elsa
Löwenthal, 16
October
1913
[Vol.
5,
Doc.
478]).
[2]A
reference
to
the
ill-feelings initially generated among European
scholars
by
the Manifesto
of
the
93,
in which
prominent
German
intellectuals had
defended
their
country’s
violation
of
Belgian
neutrality
the
preceding
year (see
Doc.
45,
note
3).
[3]Hermann Alexander Diels (1848-1922)
was
Professor of
Classical
Philology
at
the
University
of
Berlin, rector
of
the
same
institution,
and
a permanent secretary
of
the
Prussian
Academy.
Heinrich
Morf
(1854-1921)
was
Professor of
Romance
Philology
at the
University
of
Berlin. Two weeks
ear-
lier
Morf
had
given a well-publicized
lecture
on
the
need for
a
national culture that
was compatible
with
cosmopolitanism (see
Grappin 1952,
pp.
18
and
85-86).
The
previous
autumn,
he
had, however,
signed
the Manifesto
of
the
93, as
had Max
Planck and Wilhelm
Waldeyer,
also
permanent
secretaries
of
the
Academy.
On
the
verso
of
an
undated
calling card,
Einstein
urges
Diels
or
Morf
to receive Nicolai
for
a
discussion of
the latter’s
new
appeal (see entry
of
after 20
February
1915
in
Calendar).
[4]Aurel
Boleslav Stodola (1859-1942)
was
Professor of
Mechanical
Engineering
at
the
ETH.
Heinrich
Zangger
(1874-1957)
was
Professor of
Forensic
Medicine at the
University
of
Zurich and
Director of
its
Institute
of
Forensic Medicine
(see
his
Biography,
Vol. 5, pp.
642-643).
