CALENDAR
FEBRUARY 1914-DECEMBER
1918
This
listing,
with abstracts
of
the content
of
all
correspondence
and documents
provided
in
the
Calendar,
consists
of
four elements:
(1)
All known
letters from
and
to Einstein
that
fall
within
this
period
and
are
excluded from
the
selection
of
texts
on grounds
explained
in
the
Editorial Method. This includes
signed
dedications to Einstein
by
authors
of
books and
articles. Variants
of
documents
that
are
presented
as
texts do not
appear
in the
Calendar,
nor
do drafts that
differ
insignificantly
from
final versions that
are presented, nor
records
of
preliminary procedural stages
of
more
substantial calendar items.
(2) Third-party
docu-
mentation
of
Einstein’s
participation
in the Prussian
Academy
of
Sciences,
of
his role
as
Director
of
the
Kaiser
Wilhelm
Institute,
his
political
involvement,
and other
references to
public
activities.
No
attempt
is
made, however,
to
document
Einstein’s
mere
attendance at
class
or plenary
sessions
of
the Prussian
Academy (for
a
record
of
his
attendance,
see
Kirsten
and Treder
1979b,
pp.
207-286),
nor
his
acknowledgment
of
the action
of
other
members
of the
Academy.
(3)
References
to
Einstein’s
writings
that
appear
in the
accompanying
series
of
the edition. In the
case
of
published papers,
the date refers
to
receipt
by a journal,
unless indicated
otherwise,
such
as
submission dates to the Prussian
Academy. (4)
References to
significant occurrences
in
Einstein’s
life
during
this
period.
