From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich, after 21 October 1919] AE’s idea of moving his family is very expensive, as the exchange rate of the German mark against the Swiss franc has rapidly deteriorated. It would be better to rent a few rooms in Zurich, and better still to build up some reserves and only withdraw Swiss francs, without exchanging German marks. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 208, p. 329. [95 365]. Vol. 9, 233a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich,] 24 December 1919 Expects an explanation from AE about the magnitude of light deflection when they meet next time, perhaps in Basel. Denies that he has not supported AE’s wish to move the family to Baden: in fact, the idea was originally his. The sickly Eduard was sent to Aegeri, while Hans Albert Einstein will stay with the Zanggers again, for which they do not expect remuneration. Does not understand how Fritz Haber, the inventor of poison gas, could receive a Nobel Prize, and AE has not received it. Will lodge a protest with Svante Arrhenius, a member of the Nobel committee for physics. Bolshevism is less of a problem in Switzerland than the corrupting influence of foreign capital. Hans Albert and he himself send greetings and hope that AE will remain modest in the face of public recognition. Zangger 1920 will appear soon. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 213, p. 339. [95 366]. Vol. 10, 183a. From Gerhard Janssen [Berlin,] 27 November 1920 Thanks for AE’s letter of 24 November. Requests advice in understanding the “dualism” of gravitation and electromagnetism. Proposes an energy tensor which gives the differ- ence between world lines of electrically charged bodies and geodesic lines. Poses the question whether “dualism” in Einstein’s and Weyl’s considerations means that the elec- tromagnetic field does not affect the metric. Requests a letter of recommendation for get- ting a position in a school to earn money for living expenses and further attending AE’s seminar. ALS. [44 004]. Vol. 12, 77a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich, after 3 March 1921] Is afraid that general idolatry of AE will obscure his judgment and will rob him of his serenity. AE’s most recent supplement to the theory of relativity, which, for the better part, is a comment on Hermann Weyl’s theory, seems to show a convergence of thought with Weyl and Gustav Mie, who has given a lecture about a rotating particle at the meet- ing of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte in Bad Nauheim. As a mere observer of the scientific debates about Niels Bohr’s atom model, he is more interested in the reception than the content. Is more familiar with themes like the diffusion coeffi- cient as described at the beginning of the century by William Sutherland and AE. Schul- mann 2012, Doc. 225, p. 361. [95 373]. Vol. 12, 118. TLS (Alexander Stolpmann, Goslar, Germany). [95 382]. Vol. 12, 139a. To Heinrich Zangger New York, 28 May 1921 The only reason for his trip to the U.S. is to raise funds for a Jewish university. The U.S. is full of energy. Even though much is superficial there, he is particularly impressed by the science laboratories where pure research is done, and where costs are not an issue.
