December 25 1912 January January 18 The winter semester at the German University begins: Einstein teaches courses in mechanics and thermody- namics, while also conducting seminar discussions. Gives a series of eight lectures, "Über einige neuere Fortschritte auf dem Gebiete der theoretischen Physik" to a conference for secondary-school teachers in Zurich. Travels to Bern to consult with Ludwig Forrer on a call to the ETH. Returns to Prague. Arrives in Brussels for first Solvay Congress. Contributes discussion remarks at the Solvay Congress (Vol. 3, Doc. 25). Henri Poincare to Pierre Weiss recommends Einstein for a position at the ETH transcription in Seelig 1954, p. 163. Delivers lecture to the Solvay Congress on "The Cur- rent State of the Problem of Specific Heat" (Vol. 3, Doc. 26) and participates in discussion (Vol. 3, Doc. 27). Marie Curie to Pierre Weiss recommends Einstein for a position at the ETH. Meets in Zurich with the President of the ETH, Robert Gnehm, to finalize details of a call there. Wilhelm Ostwald again nominates Einstein for Nobel Prize in Physics, citing his contribution in relativity. Copy of Meyer, C. F. 1911 is inscribed in Einstein's hand to Mileva Einstein-Marid: "Zu Weihnachten vom Christkindl auf Empfehlung ihres Babu." Provenance: Einstein's personal library. Begins work on a manuscript on electrodynamics and relativity theory (Vol. 4, Doc. 1). Ernst Pringsheim, Clemens Schaefer, and Wilhelm Wien propose that H. A. Lorentz and Einstein share equally the 1912 Nobel Prize for the development of the relativity principle. "Thermodynamic Proof of the Law of Photochemical Equivalence" (Vol. 4, Doc. 2).
