I
made Eötvös’s
acquaintance
in
Hamburg
at
a
conference in
1912
and found
him
very
congenial.[8]
He is
strikingly
modest
and benevolent. Helmert also
was
similar.
How
drawn
one
feels
toward
a
person
who
is
not
only intelligent
but
also
has
a
fine
character!
Only rarely
does
one come
across
such
people,
though.
You
are right, intelligence
without
good
character
turns
people
into beasts. This
simple
truth
was
clear to
me long
before
the
war,
and
I
did not
understand
why
persons
whom
I
had
respected
before the
war sought means
suitable
for
destroying
millions
of
people
in
a
single
stroke. If
I
had
not had Ad.
Schmidt[9] with
me
at Potsdam,
I
would have felt
completely
isolated. Here in
the
occupied
region
one
also
sees more clearly
the other
side
of
what had been commended to
me so
loudly
at
home
as
patriotism
and what
I
had
once
in
agitation
called
the
most
dangerous
of all virtues.
I
hope
Wiechert
accepts
the
appointment.[10]
A
Göttingen man
has
certainly
already
been
designated
as
his
successor.
In
the
winter
I sent
Hilbert and Wiechert
some
of
my papers,
but the
gentlemen
will
probably
barely
remember
that
by
now,
and
my prospects
of
coming
to
Göttingen
are likely as
slim
as
the
chance of
an
imminent
peace.
The
arrival
of
the
crate
so
quickly
and in such
good
condition
pleased
me
very
much. If
you
have
a
craving
for beans and
peas,
I
can
procure
them
for
you very
easily;
this
is
the
only
thing
that
can
still be
gotten
hold
of
easily.
Hoping
that
you
are feeling
better
now
than
you
did in
the
winter,
I
am
with
best
regards, yours truly,
Schweydar

In accordance with
your
wish,
I
also inform
you
that
my
disbursements
amount to
about
4 M.
505. To Mileva Einstein-Maric
[Berlin,
before
15 April
1918][1]
Dear
Mileva,
I
have received
the draft
contract and send
my
cordial
thanks
to
Dr. Zürcher
for his
help.[2]
Now
I,
on
my
part,
have emended
suggested
alterations,
which
I
am going
to
comment
on right
away.
I
have
entered them
on
my
copy
as
well.
You
can
then
send this
copy
back to
me
with
your
suggested changes,
in
case
you
would
like
to add
any.
Then,
when
we are
in
agreement,
I’ll
have two
duplicates
made,
one
of which
you’ll
receive
signed.
