Mr. Max Wien
because
currently
he is
often in Berlin.
Since
this
candidate
has
declined, owing
to
overburdening
with
military
matters,
no one
else
came
into
consideration whom
we
could
hope
to
be
present frequently
at
the
meetings.
So
the
choice fell
spontaneously
on you,
without
anyone
else
having
been drawn into
consideration. This
unanimity
deserves
acknowledgment,
and
requesting
that
you
soon
convey
this
to
the
Society
in the form
of
a ready
yes,
I
am
yours,
A. Einstein
In
addition,
cordial
private greetings.

Esteemed
Colleague,
Today
two
more
questions,
re
your
latest
communication
to
the
Berlin Acad-
emy.[1]
I leave
completely
aside
the
case
of
the
closed
world.[2]
1.
Why are there closed systems? Let
us
take the solar system
as
a whole,
for
instance. Then, at a great
distance,[3]
dul
=
_dul_dul_dul
dx4 dx1 dx2 dx3
(including
gravitational effect
+
radiation)
would
certainly
become
very small,
but the
integrals
/dU4a/dx4dx1dx2dx3
would have
to
extend
over a
correspondingly
large region,
and
I
cannot
see
how
their
values would
approach 0.
2.
Furthermore,
I do
not
understand
(p. 4) how,
with the methods
of
special
relativity
theory, it can be shown
that
Ja
is
a four
vector.[4]
For
the
integrals,
surely the
upper
index
4
is
always singled out.
I
am missing some middle
term
there.[5]
Very
truly
yours,
Klein.
