From Mikhail Pokrovsky Berlin, 26 May 1925 The responsibility toward the Jewish population of the USSR prevents them from selling the Günzburg library without replacing it with another one of equal value. The library has not been detained. The Soviet government has nationalized this treasure. The collec- tion consists mainly of manuscripts. The law prohibits the export of old books, manu- scripts, etc. The price asked for the library (£15,000, i.e., 150,000 rubles in gold) is meager compared to the specialists’ estimate of several million rubles. The Russian representative in the commission, [Anatoly K.] Vinogradov, has resigned due to illness [Vladimir I.] Nevskii has been appointed as his successor. The third member of the com- mittee will be named after the meeting with the representative of the Jerusalem library. TLC. [91 402]. 692.
