From Hans Vaihinger Halle, 5 June 1923 Sends the three judges’ evaluations of the Einstein Prize competition organized by the Als-Ob Gesellschaft, and the unanimous decision in choosing the finalist, Aloys Wenzl, from Munich. Regrets the low amount of 5,000 M allotted to the prize and asks whether additional prize money could be found from a donor, also to reward the runners-up. Ray- mund Schmidt also agrees with the prize award. He also objects to Reichenbach 1922, which characterizes the “Als-Ob” philosophy as critical of the theory of relativity, which it is not. After lecturing to the Kant Society in Halle and discussing the matter in person, Reichenbach has agreed to modify his earlier statement. TLS. [23 140]. 89. To Hans Reichenbach Berlin, 9 June 1923 In response to Abs. 34 and Abs. 44, he has spoken to the Prussian Academy of Sciences and was told that the Notgemeinschaft der deutschen Wissenschaft can be helpful. Al- though he does not have relations with the Notgemeinschaft, he is ready to support his request warmly, and will talk to Fritz Haber personally. TKS. [20 081]. 90. From Lange at Kammergericht Berlin, 9 June 1923 In the matter of Anschütz vs. Borck & Goldschmidt, the panel of judges denies AE’s re- quest to call another expert witness, and summons him to court on the set date. TLS. [45 042]. 92. From Felix Stumpf Neubabelsberg, 11 June 1923 Sends a copy of his letter to the Kuratorium of the Einstein Stiftung in Potsdam ([11 271]), in which he quoted AE’s statement that he would resign if Ludendorff and Freundlich would not let Stumpf have the telescope donated by Siemens & Halske. Claims that Ludendorff will probably claim that such gifts belong to the institute, but this is nonsense. ALS. [11 269]. 93. From Josef Weber Leipzig, 11 June 1923 Proposes a method for calculating gravitational redshift from observations on binary stars. Wishes to use the large mirror telescope in Potsdam, and has consulted Julius Bauschinger and Paul Guthnik. Will report on findings on 21 June in Rudolf Schmidt’s Laboratory for Applied Physics at the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt. ALS. [23 271]. 94. To Mikhail Pokrovsky Berlin, 13 June 1923 While in Palestine, he realized how important the National and University Library in Jerusalem would be for the cultural life and scientific progress there, especially in the field of oriental studies. David Günzburg’s collection of books had been bought a long time ago its transfer to Jerusalem is an urgent necessity. The director of the National and University Library in Jerusalem, Heinrich Loewe, has written several times but to no avail. Requests help for transferring the collection to its rightful owner. TLC. To Boris Schatz Berlin, 14 June 1923 In reply to Schatz’s request of 21 February 1923 (Vol. 13, Abs. 526), assures that Schatz will receive Emil Orlik’s etching, but it is not yet ready, since AE has to sit for the artist again.
