1-page TLS from Vieweg publishing house. Its representa-
tive could not discuss the translations with Einstein because
Einstein left the 30 December meeting early. Advises him to
ask 3 pence per copy for the English translation of Einstein
1917a (Vol. 6, Doc. 42), of which half is Einstein’s honorar-
ium, and restrict the selling rights to Great Britain and its
colonies in order to allow the possibility of an American
edition. If they desire U.S. rights, the price must be set
higher. The 4th edition is completely sold out; corrections to
a 5th edition are urgently requested. Provenance: IsJHU.

January 3 1-page TLC to Vieweg publishing house. There is no finan-
cial risk in the English edition, therefore asks 2 pence roy-
alty, 1 penny for the publisher, and permission for selling it
in the U.S. If Vieweg does not accept these terms, he will
agree to the royalty proposed in entry of 2 January only for
a fixed number of copies, and will cease publishing with
Vieweg. Promises to send the corrections to the 5th edition
of Einstein 1917a (Vol. 6, Doc. 42). Provenance: IsJHU.

January 5 1-page TLC to Ethel Allen in London. Remembers meeting
her brother (see entry of 13 December). Took his silence as
indication that he had given up on the plan of translating
Einstein 1917a (Vol. 6, Doc. 42). Lacking his address, Ein-
stein was unable to inform him that an English colleague
had approached him for the same purpose. Since Einstein
has already consented to this recent request, he can no
longer fulfill the brother’s wish. Provenance: IsJHU.

to spend 15 months from June 1921 to September 1922 in

etry, dynamics, and the theory of relativity. Asks whether
Einstein will lecture at the University of Leyden in this
period and on what subjects. Provenance: IsJHU. [44 348].
