22. To Felix Klein
[Berlin,] 14. IV. 19
Verehrter Herr Kollege!
Ich freue mich mit Ihrer neuen
Arbeit[1]
muss.[2]
Eine kurze Meinungsäusserung darüber wäre mir sehr interessant.
Es grüsst Sie herzlich Ihr ergebener
A. Einstein.

[2]The paper is Einstein 1919a (Vol. 7, Doc. 17). The modified field equations presented there sat-
isfy the demand that their trace rather than their divergence vanishes. The equations were not derived
from a variational principle and, in fact, cannot be derived from a generally covariant Lagrangian that
is simply the sum of a term for the gravitational field and a term for matter.

[Berlin,] 15. IV. 19.
Lieber Herr Dr.

scheint.[3]
