senschaft, Kunst und Volksbildung W. 8, Unter den Linden 4.”
[1]Konrad Haenisch (1876–1925) was Prussian minister of education and a member of the Social
Democratic Party.
[2]Erwin Freundlich; Karl Schwarzschild (1873–1916); Gustav Müller. The report contains the res-
olution: “In agreement with the German government, to provide the means to enable Germany to
engage in further successful joint work with other nations on the extension of the fundamental dis-
coveries of Albert Einstein and further related research” (“Im Einvernehmen mit der Reichsregierung
9, 35, 40, 85,
89). The report does not mention the 150,000 marks. The information might come from Undersecre-
tary for Education Carl H. Becker who expressed to Freundlich his hope that the Parliament would
accept the allocation of 150,000 marks to this end (see Erwin Freundlich to Adolf von Harnack, 15
December 1919).
The idea of allocating a special fund in the Prussian state budget for Einstein’s research arose in a
discussion of Freundlich with Becker in November 1919 (see Freundlich to Konrad Haenisch, 9 May
1920, GyBSa, I. HA, Rep. 76 Vc, Sekt. 1, Tit. 11, Teil 5c, Nr. 55, Bl. 43). On 28 November the budget
committee of the Ministry of Education proposed to the budget commission of the Prussian Parlia-
ment (Landesversammlung) that sufficient funds be made available for furthering Einstein’s funda-
mental research (see entry of 26 November 1919 in Calendar).
[3]In a marginal note, Hugo A. Krüss (1879–1945), ministerial director in the Ministry of Educa-
tion, states: “I have made the suggestion to support Dr. Freundlich through the Astrophysics Obser-
vatory in Potsdam after the rejection of G[eheim]R[at] Struve had made his stay at the Babelsberg
Observatory impossible. G[eheim]R[at] Müller of Potsdam then thoughtfully took an interest in the
matter. I hope that it will be possible to appoint Freundlich as Observator at the Potsdam observatory”
Krüss intervened on Freundlich’s behalf with Müller (see Hugo A. Krüss to Einstein, 6 January 1918
[Vol. 8, Doc. 431]). Upon Einstein’s inquiry, Müller declared his readiness to give permission to
Freundlich to work in the observatory, to learn methods for his research, and to use its instruments
(see Gustav Müller to Einstein, 9 January 1918 [Vol. 8, Doc. 434]). He was, however, reluctant to give
Freundlich the only free Hilfsarbeiter position, because he had promised it to someone else.
[4]One month earlier, Einstein had written to Wilouner, head of the office for rental matters
(Mietseinigungsamt) of the city of (Berlin-)Schöneberg (see Doc. 159). Also see Carl H. Becker (for
Konrad Haenisch) to Mietseinigungsamt, 12 December (GyBSa, I. HA, Rep. 76 Vc, Sekt. 1, Tit. 11,
Teil 5c, Nr. 55, Bl. 4) and Kirsten and Treder 1979b, p. 90, Nr. 332.
