DOC. 86 PRESENT SITUATION IN EUROPE 151 BEMERKUNGEN ZUR GEGENWÄRTIGEN EUROPÄISCHEN SITUATION Von Prof. Dr. ALBERT EINSTEIN (Berlin) Die gegenwärtige politische Situation der Welt und insbesondere Europas scheint mir dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die politische Entwicklung materiell und ideell hinter den in relativ kurzer Zeit geänderten wirtschaftlichen Notwendigkeiten zurückge- blieben ist. Interessen der Einzelstaaten müssen Interessen der größeren Gemeinschaft untergeordnet werden. Der Kampf um diese neue Einstellung des politischen Denkens und Fühlens ist ein schwerer, weil er die Traditionennationalen von Jahrhunderten gegen sich hat. Aber von seinem glücklichen Ausgang hängt die Lebensfähigkeit Europas ab. Es ist meine feste Überzeugung, daß nach Über- windung jener psychologischen Hemmungen die Lösung der realen Probleme nicht allzu schwer sein wird. Um die richtige Atmosphäre zu erzeugen, dazu bedarf es vor allem der persönlichen Verbindung Gleich-Strebender. Es muß deshalb in erster Linie danach getrachtet w erden, allen denjenigen Organisationen wieder ihren inter- Charakter zu geben, die künstlerische, wissen- schaftliche und tharitative Zwecke verfolgen. The present political situation of the world, and particulari)' that of Europe, seems to me to be characterised by the fact that political develop- ment both materially and ideally does not keep pacematerial with the economic necessities that have undergone such notable changes within a comparatively short period. The interests of single States must give way to the interests of the larger unit of society. The fight which is to bring about these new' political ideas and senti-sations ments is hard, because there are traditions centuries old to be overcome. But the life or death of Europe depends on the issue. I am convinced that when the psycholog- ical obstacles have been overcome the solution of the problems will not be st difficult. In order to create the proper atmosphere, all peoples who are striving after the same goal must be brought into closer touch with eadi other. We must, therefore, endeavour to give back their international character to all those organi- whose aim it is to serve and promote all artistic, scientific, and charitable institutions. RÉFLEXIONS SUR LA SITUATION EUROPÉENNE ACTUELLE par le Professeur Dr ALBERT EINSTEIN (Berlin) Ce qui me semble caractériser la situation politique actuelle du monde entier et particulièrement dela l’Europe, c’est que, matériellement et intellectuelle- ment, l’évolution politique s’est laissée distancer par les transformations économiques qui, répondant aux besoins de l’époque, se sont trouvées réalisées dans un laps de temps relativement court. Les intérêts de chaque État pris en particulier doivent se subordonner aux intérêts supérieurs d’une communauté plus vaste, la communauté des nations. Ayant contre elle des traditions plusieursà fois séculaires, cette lutte pour l’orientation nouvelle des idées et des sentiments politiques ne peut manquer d’êtreinternational. ardue. Fui mon âme et conscience, je suis convaincu qu’une fois ces barrières d’ordre psycho- logique franchies la solution des problèmes matériels ne sera pas trop malaisée. Ce qui importe, c’est de créer une atmosphère favorable, et pour cela besoin est avant tout de mettre en rapports personnels les uns avec les autres ceux qui visent au même idéal.
