From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich, 22 August 1916] Mileva Einstein-Maric’s health is improving but recovery will take a long time. The chief physician of the Theodosianum, Oscar Hengeler, agrees with his prognosis. The two boys are healthy and at home being well cared for by the housemaid. The condition of Gustav Huguenin is cause for concern because of his age. Besso is continuing his re- covery in Basel. Believes in the correctness of general relativity, the development of which he has been following since 1910. Has just seen Hans Albert Einstein, who did not know until now that his mother is in hospital. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 122, p. 197. [95 342]. Vol. 8, 268a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich,] 21 October 1916 The money AE sent has been deposited in Mileva Einstein-Maric ’s account. As she is worried about the costs, she wants to leave the Theodosianum and return home. Together with physicians Oscar Hengeler and Otto Veraguth, will decide whether this is a sensible idea. The boys visited twice. Hans Albert Einstein is protective of Eduard in a touching manner. Zangger was just recovering from experiments with poisons when Hans Albert Einstein visited last. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 126, p. 202. [95 343]. Vol. 8, 283a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich,] 6 December 1916 After returning home from the hospital at the end of October, Mileva Einstein-Maric’s health is not worse, though the condition of her heart is problematic. Will consult Otto Veraguth. Heard that Hans Albert Einstein received a letter from AE (Vol. 8, 279?). Has not had a chance to discuss AE’s work with Besso, nor can he report progress on his own manuscript. Was asked to be available as an adviser to the Regional Building Directorate of Zurich. Based on his negative experiences with the authorities, it seems that he should keep to Ovid’s maxim: “He who has lived in happy seclusion has lived happily.” Schul- mann 2012, Doc. 129, p. 205. [95 344]. Vol. 8, 285a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich,] 16 December 1916 Having examined Mileva Einstein-Maric together with Otto Veraguth, they are con- cerned about two new, painful spots in the area of the lower spine. Clearly a long recov- ery period and patience are required. Visits Mileva Einstein-Maric often, although he is away on military business for weeks on end. Suggests that Veraguth, a neurological spe- cialist, be involved in Mileva Einstein-Maric’s treatment. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 130, p. 207. [95 345]. Vol. 8, 288a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich, after 20 January1917] Is amused by the thought that AE, with all his contempt for material things, is now de- pendent on food from Switzerland. To obtain the export permit for AE as a Swiss citizen living in Germany, he has turned to several government agencies where the reaction was quite open-minded, but he still needs a medical certificate from AE’s doctor. AE should be aware that supplies are limited. Zangger will need to recover from his stomach ail- ment in the spring. By then his book will be completed. Mentions an unrealistic plan by Besso. Schulmann 2012, Doc. 133, p. 212. [95 346]. Vol. 8, 291a. From Heinrich Zangger [Zurich, after 28 January 1917] The pediatrician Jakob Bernheim-Karrer is treating Eduard for chronic pneumonia with high fever, and for scrofulosis, which is keeping him in bed. The boy next door, Richard Zürcher, is suffering from similar symptoms. It can be excluded that Eduard was infect- ed by his mother. Suggests that, as in the case of his daughter Gertrud and the young
