[1] Einstein was requested by Heinrich Zangger to write a congratulatory essay for A. Stodola’s sev- entieth birthday, to be published in the newspaper (see Abs. 1059). Einstein had already contributed a scientific paper to a Festschrift in honor of Stodola (see Einstein 1929g, Doc. 313). He found it dif- ficult to compose a more personal article and requested help from Michele Besso (see Doc. 512). Zangger also provided additional details in order to assist (see Doc. 499).
