557. To Mileva
Einstein-Maric
[Berlin,]
4
June
1918
Dear
Mileva,
It
is
not
without
some gratification
that
I
learn
from
your
letter that
you
also have
had
problems
with
Anna
Besso.[1]
She has
written
me
such
impertinent
letters that
I’ve put
an
end to
further
correspondence[2]
and
am never
going
to
be able to have
dealings
with
her
again.
It
must be
granted
her, though,
that
she
is
not
quite
normal.
Michele,
however,
is
independent
of her
to
a
great
extent.
All
the
same,
if
you prefer, speak
with
some
other
discerning
man
about
our
affairs.
You
can
be
sure
that
I
have
arranged
the
matter for
your welfare,
to
the best
of
my
knowledge
and conscience. Prime securities at
the
current
market
value of
40 000 M
have
already gone
out
to
you.
This
transfer
is
a
great
privilege
granted
to
me personally.[3]
I
did
it
upon
mature reflection.
It
is
the best
thing
conceivable
that
I could
do
under
the
present
circumstances to
secure
your
and
the
children’s
future. In
addition,
20
000
M
are
to be
deposited here,
the interest
of
which
you’ll
receive in
the
case
of
my
death.[4]
This
summer
I’m not
going
to
come
to Switzerland.
I
dread
the strain and
stress of
the
trip. I’m
going
instead to
a
little
village by
the
Baltic Sea for
two
months.[5] I
cordially
invite
Albert
to
come
along. (Tete
is
maybe
still too
delicate.)[6]
I
could
certainly
get
the
traveling permission
through,
and for
him
the strain
would be
quite
trivial.
We
would do
a
great
deal of
sailing
there,
but
not
on our own,
because it
is
forbidden, unfortunately.
Besides that, he could
go
swimming regularly
in
the
sea.
I
leave
it to
you
to consent to
it;
if
not,
there
is
no
need for
justification.
Don’t take
me
for
a
cruel
father;
it
would not be
sensible for
me
to
embark
on
the
trip
under
the
existing traveling
conditions.[7]
Please
do
send
me
the
corrected contract
soon
and
file
the
divorce
as soon as
the
opportunity
arises.
Best
regards, yours,
Albert.
Kisses to
the
boys.
