To Elsa Einstein [Leyden,] Tuesday [7 February 1928][1] Dear Elsa, Today I arrived, on schedule, Ehrenfest and Pavlik awaiting me at the train station.[2] I had already visited De Haas, in addition agreed to give a talk on Lorentz in the university auditorium on Friday.[3] The funeral is on Thursday. Everyone is depressed. I am staying in Mrs. Ehrenfest’s[4] room and smoked a pipe there, lying on her bed. If she does not notice that, then telepathy is refuted once and for all. I couldn’t sleep in the train and after the meal I couldn’t sleep here, either. The Engadin is really necessary, I see that.[5] Make sure that the Jews have mercy on me so that we can travel.[6] Here it’s damp and stormy, but the Ehrenfests are very nice and warm the soul. Tania passed her exam.[7] She’s very smart. Too bad that there’s no boy to carry on the “dynasty she would have the stuff to do it.[8] Best wishes from your Albert
