To Arnold Berliner[1] [Berlin,] 30 January 1929 Dear Mr. Berliner, On the one hand, I was happy to see that you have such a powerful moral vein.[2] On the other, I feel sorry that you are wasting your feelings on such unworthy ob- jects. At the very least, I must say that of the two of them, L. seems to me to be considerably more clumsy, but to a great extent the more decent of the two.[3] For my own part, I do not believe that it would be productive for me to become in- volved in any way in this controversy, but I will place your letter respectfully with those which for me correspond to what you call files.— With best regards, your 389. To Max von Laue Berlin, 30 January 1929 Dear Laue, You can count on me in every respect. I feel that it would be objectively correct and much more productive if you were to be relieved of all your teaching duties.[1] In my considered opinion, it would have doubtless been the right course of action for you to have become the director of a K.[aiser] W.[ilhelm] Institute, as was planned.[2] I found it incomprehensible back then that you didn’t continue to pursue that goal. This could still be rectified. It is quite certainly an error that there is de facto still no K. W. Institute for physics. How would it be if you were the director of such an institute, in which O. Klein[3] from Hamburg would be given a position?
