it in Anschütz & Co. to Einstein, 12 July 1918 (Vol. 8, Doc. 587), Einstein wrote the present docu-
ment.
Anschütz lost the case, and the patent was granted to the Society of Nautical Instruments on 11
September 1918 as Deutsches Reichspatent 307847.

are mounted on the moving system such that their torque be opposite to the torque of the system’s
movements around the axis of rotation of the main gyroscope. In other words, the system will form
another ‘gyropendulum’ with respect to the axis of rotation of the main gyroscope, in the sense intro-
duced by Föppl. Therefore, in each plane the inertial resistance of one or more gyroscopes has to be
overcome, giving rise to a corresponding increase in the period of oscillation. The system thus repre-
sents a large ‘apparent mass’ in each plane.” (“Danach werden einer oder mehrere Kreisel an dem
