122 DOCUMENT 103 MAY 1908 [3]Wilson's experiment was the subject of §2 of Einstein and Laub 1908a (Vol. 2, Doc. 51). It involves rotating a magnetizable dielectric between the plates of a short-circuited condenser in the presence of an external magnetic field parallel to the plates, which results in the plates being charged. Einstein and Laub predicted a different outcome for the experiment than fol- lowed from Lorentz's theory (as developed in Lorentz 1904b). [4]Erich Marx (1874-1956) was Extraordinary Professor of Physics at the University of Leipzig. [5]Laub had experimentally shown that platinum, soot, and aluminum produce secondary cathode rays when irradiated by X-rays. His results-such as a proportionality of the speed of the electrons with the frequency of the X-rays and the independence of this speed of the inten- sity of the rays-seemed to support the quantum character of X-rays. The results were pub- lished in Laub 1908b, which was received 3 June 1908 by the Annalen der Physik. 103. From Jakob Laub Wurzburg 30 May 1908] Lieber Freund! Schreiben Sie mir bitte, was Sie hierzu mei- nen. Mit bestem Gruss Ihr J. Laub AKS. [15 459]. The verso is addressed "Herrn Dr. A. Einstein, Bern (Schweiz) Aegertenstr 53," bears the sender's address "Abs. J. Laub, Würzburg, Physikal. Institut.," and is post- marked "K[öniglich] B[ayerische] Bahnpost 30 Mai 08." [1]The square brackets here and in the subsequent text are in the original and denote the vec- tor product. Wilhelm Wien's objection concerns the form of the ponderomotive force density on a conduction current in a magnetizable medium in a magnetic field (see Doc. 101, note 7, for more details).
