202 DOCUMENTS 171, 172 JULY 1909 [2]On 9 July Einstein was granted an honorary doctorate in the physical sciences by the Uni- versity of Geneva (see Diploma of this date) and given a presentation copy of a volume on Cal- vinist iconography (see Doumergue 1909, in Einstein's personal library) as part of the univer- sity's 350th anniversary celebration. Chavan apparently persuaded a reluctant Einstein to at- tend the festivities (see Einstein's statement enclosed in Helen Dukas to Carl Seelig, 19 August 1952, SzZE Bibliothek, Hs. 304:325). Two months earlier Charles-Eugene Guye (1866-1942), Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Geneva and Director of its Physical Institute, proposed Einstein for the honor (see the minutes of the meeting of the Faculty of Sciences, 4 May 1909, SzGU, 1984/22/81), and the Genevan Cantonal Council (Conseil d'Etat) gave its approval at the be- ginning of July (see Extrait des Registres du Conseil d'Etat, 2 July 1909, SzGU, 320b, 8). 171. [1]Tinguely (1864-1932) was Deputy Director (Prokurist) at the Swiss National Bank and Einstein's neighbor at Aegertenstrasse 53 (see Adressbuch Bern 1908). In his stead, among others, he recom- mends Jakob Laub, "who is presently [Assistent] with Lenard in Heidelberg" ("der gerade bei Lenard in Heidelberg ist").
