524 DOCUMENT 442 MAY 1913 [3]A reference to a publication of the Dutch astronomer Willem de Sitter (1872-1934), in which the hypothesis of the dependence of the speed of light on the motion of the source is refuted with the help of observational results for the motion of double stars (see De Sitter 1913a). De Sitter argues that the agreement between the observed velocities of double stars and Kepler's laws would disappear if the speed of light depended on the motion of the stars. The values for the velocities are deduced from the Doppler shifts of spectral lines in the light emitted by the stars. De Sitter's work is also mentioned in a manuscript by Einstein on elec- trodynamics and relativity theory (see Vol. 4, Doc. 1). [4]Eva Bruins (1885-?) of Zutphen and Catherine Frankamp (1888-?) of Leyden were reg- istered as auditors in Einstein's course at the ETH in the mechanics of continua (see Auditoren- liste SS 1913, SzZE Rektoratsarchiv, nos. 23 and 24). [5]Ehrenfest visited Einstein in Zurich for almost a month in June and July 1913 (see entries of 18 June-1 July 1913, in Diary "I," NeLR, Ehrenfest Archive, Notebooks, ENB:4-15), and entries of 12 and 13 July 1913, in Appointment book, NeLR, Ehrenfest Archive, Notebooks, ENB:5-02). [6]Ehrenfest and wife Tatiana took lodgings in a boardinghouse during their visit (see entry of 18 June 1913, in Diary "I," NeLR, Ehrenfest Archive, Notebooks, ENB:4-15), probably be- cause Michele Besso, who was also visiting at the time (see Doc. 447), stayed in the Einstein home. 442. To the Director's Office, Technikum Winterthur Zürich. Phys. Inst. d. Eidg. Polytechnikums. 29. V. 13. Zusammen-
