CALENDAR/CHRONOLOGY JUNE 1902-APRIL 1914 The following list contains documents which do not warrant inclusion as texts in the volume as well as general chronological information which is not available in spe- cific documents. The documents provide context for Einstein's activities and are presented with their provenance if archival sources are not given in the editorial apparatus to the texts. Included also are references to publications in Einstein's per- sonal library which contain handwritten dedications. In the case of published papers, the date refers to receipt by a journal, unless indicated otherwise. In future volumes of this edition, where only selected texts will be presented, this appendix will be ex- panded to include all letters written or received by Einstein which do not appear as documents. 1902, June 16 The Swiss Federal Council appoints Einstein Technical Expert third class on a trial basis at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern at an annual salary of 3500 francs. June 23 Begins work at Swiss Patent Office. June 26 "Kinetic Theory of Thermal Equilibrium and the Sec- ond Law of Thermodynamics" (Vol. 2, Doc. 3). August 14 Registers at Archivstrasse 8, Bern, where he takes a room in the house of Bertha Hausmann-Louis. Father Hermann dies in Milan. October 10 1903, January 6 Marries Mileva Marie in Bern. January 10 January 26 Registers residence at Tillierstrasse 18, Bern. "A Theory of the Foundations of Thermodynamics" (Vol. 2, Doc. 4). Easter Forms an informal study group called the Olympia Academy with Maurice Solovine Conrad Habicht joins shortly afterwards. May 2 Becomes member of the Naturforschende Gesellschaft of Bern (NGB). September October 29 Daughter "Lieserl" is registered. Registers residence at Kramgasse 49, Bern.
