Es grüsst Sie bestens Ihr A. The TTrL is the source of the text, with the exception of the portion of the first paragraph next to the drawing, which is taken from the facsimile on p. 344 and indicates that there is a perforation for a loose- leaf binder at the right margin of the original. [1]This letter is dated on the assumption that it was written the Saturday before the papers written with Ludwig Hopf were received by the Annalen der Physik (see note 13). [2]See Doc. 204, note 10 for the recommendation to and approval by the faculty. [3]The minister's reasoning is stated in an explicitly nationalistic form in his memorandum (see Doc. 211, note 12). Friedrich Adler, an Austrian national, suggested that Einstein's status as a foreigner was less the difficulty than that he was registered in Switzerland as being "with- out religious affiliation" ("konfessionslos") (see Kathia Adler to Victor Adler, 23 June 1910, AVVGdA, Adler-Archiv, Mappe 78). On Einstein's registration in Switzerland, see Question- naire for Municipal Citizenship Applicants, 11-26 October 1900 (Vol. 1, Doc. 82). Eighteen months later Einstein gave indirect confirmation of Adler's characterization when he was quoted as saying that while he would not have undergone conversion, " 'returning to the bosom of Abraham meant nothing to me. A piece of paper that had to be signed.' " (""In den Schoß Abrahams zurückzukehren-das war gar nichts. Ein unterschriebenes Papier."") (see Paul Ehrenfest to Tatiana Ehrenfest, 25 February 1912, NeLR, Ehrenfest Archive, Person- al Correspondence, EPC:3, section 6). [4]See Einstein and Laub 1908b (Vol. 2, Doc. 52). [5]Perhaps a reference to Max Laue's criticism of Einstein and Laub 1908a (Vol. 2, Doc. 51) mentioned in Einstein and Laub 1909 (Vol. 2, Doc. 54). [6]Wien's Encyklopädie article on the electromagnetic theory of light (Wien 1909) only mentions Einstein's and Laub's work in a footnote, in which it is pointed out that their view is somewhat different from the usual one (p. 176). [7]The square brackets (which are in the original) denote vector products i is the current density and H and B are the magnetic force and induction, respectively. The controversy con-
