draw a portrait of AE for a portrait album of famous men, to
be published by Westermann. Mentions Liebermann’s por-
trait of AE, which he saw in Liebermann’s atelier. [43 900].
TLS from Münchner Neueste Nachrichten. Returns letter
written from IE on 19 Jan. The address seems to be incor-
rect and asks what staff member of the newspaper wrote the
letter she mentioned in her correspondence. [44 508].
ALS from Robert W. Lawson. Returns the manuscript of
Einstein 1921d. He will also publish Weyl 1921b in the spe-
cial number of Nature. Twenty thousand copies of the
English edition of Einstein 1917a have already been sold.

Feb 9 Dft to Robert Schorr in IE’s hand. Since publications in the-
oretical physics are lacking, he cannot give an opinion on
Johannes Classen’s qualification for the chair. Is convinced
that achievement in theoretical physics should be a pre-
requisite for such appointments. [8 404].
TLS from Springer. Happy to publish “Geometry and Expe-
rience” in expanded form. Proposes to divide the net profit

ALS from Theodor Wulf. As a skeptic of AE’s theory as a
whole but not of certain statements; brings up Mach’s
bucket experiment and inquires whether one could set up an
experiment to measure the centrifugal force of a rotating
mass of Hg in a vessel contained within rotating lead rings
by measuring the shift of a light beam reflected by the Hg

Feb 10 TLCX from IE to Maurice Solovine, proposes 20% of the
book price for AE and 10% for Solovine in the negotiations
with the French publisher of Einstein 1920j. Offers “Geom-
etry and Experience” for translation into French, but not
before an appendix will be added and published in German.

which confirms the receipt of 17,083.95 M (16,030 M plus
