LECTURES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, 3–5 MAY 1921,
AND AT THE FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL, CHICAGO, 4 MAY 1921
The text of three lectures at the University of Chicago [90 542, 90 544, and 90 545] and of
one lecture at Chicago’s Francis Parker School [90 543] presented below is based on a
typed transcript of unavailable shorthand notes. The typescript is preserved at the Wiscon-
sin Historical Society, Madison, WI (WiMaHS), Anita McCormick Blaine Papers, Series
1E, Box 237. The typescript was prepared by a Miss Zimmerman, apparently on behalf of
Mrs. Emmons Blaine, née McCormick (see Edgar J. Goodspeed to Emmons Blaine, 12
May 1921, WiMaHS, Anita McCormick Blaine Papers, Box 273) [90 631].
According to reports in several dailies, e.g., the Chicago Daily Tribune of 2, 3, and 4 May,
the Chicago Daily News of 4 May, the Daily Maroon of 3 and 4 May, and the Examiner of
4 May, the three lectures at the university were given on 3, 4, and 5 May 1921. Both the
Chicago Daily Tribune of 4 May and the Examiner of 4 May also mention the lecture at the
Francis Parker School for that day. In contradiction to the dates provided by these newspa-
pers, the transcripts, apparently in error, give the dates of the lectures as 4, 5, and 6 May.
The 28 pages of transcripts for the four lectures were paginated sequentially, with typewrit-
ten numbers in the center of the top margins. The first page of each typescript was not num-
bered. The page numbers of the original are indicated below in the margin; page numbers
that do not appear in the original are in square brackets.
