To Paul Epstein Berlin NW 2, Unter den Linden [20], 10 June 1926 Dear Mr. Epstein, I am writing to you today on behalf of Dr. Reichenbach, whose publications have surely already caught your attention, you being a man with philosophical in- terests. Reichenbach is one of the few ranking younger epistemologists and axiom- atic theoreticians that Germany has.[1] Planck and Laue already attempted[2] to secure him a teaching position at the University of Berlin. This failed, however, quite certainly because of a political thing too silly for non-Prussian ears to hear.[3] Since I value Reichenbach very highly, it is important to me to provide for him a sphere of professional activity and I thought that perhaps there might be some opportunity in the United States. My request is that you kindly consider how I could go about doing something for him in America.— All of us here are captivated by Schrödinger’s[4] new theory of quantum states. As strange as it is to introduce a field into q-space, the productivity of this idea is nonetheless astonishing. Kind regards, your A. Einstein 305. From Moritz Schlick Vienna IV, Prinz-Eugen-Str. 68, 12 June 1926 Dear, esteemed Professor, After lengthy delays, the unveiling of the Mach monument finally took place to- day in Rathaus Park in front of the university. I very heartily thank you one more time for the contribution, which, as you see in the enclosure, is printed in today’s issue of the Neue Freie Presse.[1] Some more contributions in memory of Mach (e.g., by Lampa)[2] will, I believe, be appearing later, and I shall gladly send them to you as well. You would surely like the little monument. It is simple and stands in a quiet, shady spot of the park. What a pleasure it would be for me to be able to show it to you sometime soon! The present quantum physics greatly astonishes philosophers. But astonishment is, of course, good for them.[3] Much philosophizing is going on now in Vienna. I hope to be able to present a few samples to you soon that are certainly going to interest you. With warmest wishes, in profound gratitude and devotion, your M. Schlick
