which was held in Zurich, 10–12 September 1917. Some of the more than 1,200 participants were

Vol. 8, 374a. To Elsa Einstein
[Lucerne,] Donnerstag. [23 August 1917]
Liebe Else!
Mein zweites Telegramm hast Du hoffentlich erhalten.
Benzingen.[2]
Etwa 10
Tage (mindestens) will ich dort bleiben (bei Brandhuber). Dies passt auch für Dich
vortrefflich.[3]
Sch.-gr.[6]
Gruss & Kuss von Deinem
Albert.

[1]Camillus Brandhuber. Einstein had canceled a planned stay with him a week earlier (see Vol. 8,
Doc. 371a, in the present volume).
[2]On their previouly planned rendezvous, see the preceding document.
[3]Due to the postponement of her mother and daughter’s return to Berlin (see Vol. 8, Doc. 370c,
in the present volume).
[4]Anna Besso-Winteler, in whose home in Zurich Einstein planned to spend the rest of August (see
Vol. 8, Doc. 371b, in the present volume).
[5]Pauline Einstein, who had been vacationing with her brother in Weggis (see Vol. 8, Doc. 365a,
in the present volume).
[6]See note 3. The uncle is Rudolf Einstein. The last fragment is probably an ironic reference (in
abbreviated form) to “Schützengraben” (“trench”).
