The gap in numbers for items 62–75 in Volume 3 is probably due to the Kanto Mega earthquake of 1 September 1923. On the following day, at 2 A.M., the building of Kaizo-Sha burned down, in- cluding its printing section. Many books, drafts, and stereotype plates were lost in the fire. In the pref- ace to volume 1, it is stated that volume 3 would include “Molecular, Electron and Quantum Theory.” In fact, volume 3, which was published on 25 April 1924, eight months after the earthquake, does not include papers on quantum theory. The missing papers would probably have included Einstein 1905k and 1917a, which Einstein explicitly mentioned in his preface. Volume 4 was published on 31 August 1923, a day before the earthquake and before volume 3 was published.
