Dated from press reports of 18 July, stating that the meeting took place the pre- vious evening (see Berliner Tageblatt, 18 July 1923, EE). [2]The gathering took place at the Beethovensaal in Berlin and was well-attended. The audience was greeted by Hellmuth von Gerlach and lectures were given by retired general Berthold von Deimling historian Veit Valentin, senior official at the German Ministry of the Interior Hans Simons and General Paul von Schönaich. Messages by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen, President of the Reichstag, Paul Löbe, and Einstein were read to the gathering. Einstein’s message was quoted as read- ing: “Einstein calls the establishment of a strong international organization the fulfillment of a precondition for Europe’s existence” (“Einstein bezeichnet die Schaffung einer kräftigen internatio- nalen Organisation als die Erfüllung einer Lebensbedingung für Europa” Berliner Tageblatt, 18 July 1923, EE). In June, Einstein had still expressed criticism of the effectiveness of the League of Nations (see Doc. 61).
