[17 077]. [1]For his first steps in building the experimental setup, see Doc. 119. [2]The setup is similar to that with which Compton had first measured a shift of wavelength for X- rays scattered off electrons (see Compton 1923). However, Compton had measured the shift in wavelength directly for an X-ray beam of the Kα- line of molybdenum (Mo), both for an unscattered primary beam, as well as for a secondary beam scattered off graphite at right angles. He had measured the wavelength spectroscopically by diffrac- tion off a calcite crystal. A disadvantage of Compton’s setup was that the intensities of the primary beam and of the scattered beam differed significantly. In the setup described in this document, the shift in wavelength is observed indirectly by looking at the change of absorption for beams scattered at different angles and passing through an absorbing substance. Specifically, the idea was to use the radiation of the Kα-line of rhodium (Rh) and pass the secondary beam through a foil of Mo. Since Mo has an absorption edge at Å, which is just a bit longer than the Kα-line of Rh with a wavelength of 0.6121 Å, the almost unshifted line at small scattering angles would still be strongly absorbed by inducing excitations in the target, whereas the Compton shifted line at larger angles could pass through the foil unhindered, i.e., with reduced ab- sorption.
