D O C U M E N T 5 9 S E P T E M B E R 1 9 2 7 1 2 1 [3] The frame of reference provided by the stars in the neighborhood of the Sun is now called “the local standard of rest.” Compared to this local frame, the Sun is moving at some 10 to 20 km/s towards a point in the constellation Hercules known as the Solar Apex. [4] This phenomenon, by which stars in the direction towards which the Sun is moving (compared to nearby stars) draw more closely together as we advance, while those to our rear draw apparently further apart, was first observed by William Herschel more than a century before (Herschel 1783). In a postscript (dated 15 September) to her letter (Abs. 114), Jahn Rusconi-Besso had specifically asked (in French, both letters are otherwise in German) about this motion towards Hercules and whether Einstein’s theory could calculate the speed of this motion. [5] Einstein and Besso met in Visp on 27 July (Doc. 28) and then spent 28 and 29 July together in Saint Maurice and Berisal, in the Swiss canton of Wallis, 120 km southeast of Bern (see Einstein and Besso 1972, p. 237). [6] In her letter (Abs. 114), Jahn Rusconi-Besso had recalled tagging along as a child when Einstein and Besso, her brother, would walk together, remarking “Ich verstand [damals] natürlich kein Wort eures Gespräches.” (“I naturally understood not a word of your conversation [back then].”) In a letter of the previous year Besso had confided to Einstein concerns for his sister, saying: “Meine Schwester geht durch ein kritische Zeit hindurch, das gibt mir viel zu denken.” (“My sister is going through a critical period it gives me much to think about”). Ich habe Herrn Warburg offen meine Meinung gesagt und weiter nichts von ihm gehört.[1] Deshalb halte ich es nicht für richtig noch einmal an ihn zu schreiben. Wenn das Abkommen mit der Hadassah acceptiert wird, oder Magnes Vorschläge ganz oder zum Teil angenommenwerden, werde ich aus dem Kuratorium und aus dem akademischen Rat austreten und in der jüdischen Presse rückhaltlos diesen Schritt begründen.[2] Dasselbe werde ich auch tun, wenn es nicht in allernächster Zeit gelingt, Magnes abzusägen.[3] Ich tue dies in der Ueberzeugung, dass es nach- gerade keinen wirklichen Schaden mehr bedeutet, wenn die Universität in den Au- gen der jüdischen Oeffentlichkeit vollkommen kompromittiert wird.
