Statement to the Press regarding Einstein 1929n[1] [Einstein 1929i] Dated 12 January 1929 Published 14 January 1929 In: Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 14 January 1929, p. 3. The report is a purely mathematical extension of the general theory of relativity. There is no occasion for anybody to be excited about it, and why the newspaper should take an interest in it I can’t understand.[2] There will be only a few mathematicians who will be inclined to read it and, al- though I never did make that statement which was ascribed to me that only eleven people in the world could understand relativity, I really don’t believe that there will be more than a handful of people who will take the trouble to follow its argument.[3] PD. [1] The text above was contained in a longer article titled “Five Pages of Einstein Manuscript Give World New Conception of Inter-relation between Mechanics and Electro-Dynamics.” It announced that Einstein had presented a five-page paper to the Prussian Academy of Sciences (Einstein 1929n [Doc. 365]) that represented “ten years of labor on the part of Prof. Einstein who has been in poor health for a long time, suffering from a heart ailment.” [2] The article mentions that Einstein was “bombarded immediately after the revelation of his new work by requests for explanations.” [3] The article announced that copies of the paper “are being made available for fellow scientists in various countries, including Prof. A. A. Michelson of the University of Chicago, Professors Millikan and Russell and Jean[s] of England.” 371. To the Julius Family [Berlin, 12 January 1929][1] Liebe Juliusse!
