Statement for George Bernard Shaw’s Seventieth Birthday[1] [Berlin?, before 26 July 1926][2] Selten schon ¢sind die² finden sich Menschen, die selbständig genug ¢bleiben² sind, um die ¢Verbrechen² Schwächen und Thorheiten ihrer Zeitgenossen zu sehen und selbst unberührt davon zu bleiben. Aber diese Einsamen verlieren meist bald den Mut, im Sinne einer Gesundung zu wirken, wenn sie die Verstocktheit der Menschen kennen gelernt haben. Nur ganz wenigen ist es gegeben, durch feinen Humor und Grazie die Generation zu faszinieren und ihr auf dem unpersönlichen Wege der Kunst den Spiegel vorzuhalten. Fischer Verlag, planned to publish a Festschrift for him on the occasion of his seventieth birthday in 1926. A committee consisting of Samuel Fischer Shaw’s Ger- man translator Siegfried Trebitsch the writers Alfred Kerr, Thomas Mann, Oskar Loerke and the director Max Reinhardt distributed a circular in May 1926 soliciting contributions for the planned volume. According to press reports, “a bulky, handsomely bound volume” containing “greetings of one hundred eminent German statesmen, authors, musicians, actors and critics,” including Einstein, was given to Shaw as a birthday tribute. The volume apparently included not only contributions from Germany but also from other European countries. Among the other contributors were Hermann Bahr, Lujo Brentano, Walter Gropius, Gerhart Hauptmann, Thomas Mann, Arthur Schnitzler, Arnold Schönberg, Oswald Spengler, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Stresemann. There are two extant copies of the birthday album. The original, with Einstein’s handwritten greeting, is housed at Shaw’s Corner in Ayot St. Lawrence, United Kingdom. An apparently incomplete typed file copy prepared by the publisher containing ninety contributions is also extant. It is titled “Bernard Shaw zum 70. Geburts- tag. 26. Juli 1926. Eine Sammlung von handschriftlichen Beiträgen zusammengestellt und überreicht vom S.
